European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) Juvenile

Shropshire Hills AONB, Shropshire, UK

Juvenile from the first brood of the year. The adult pair laid again but when the second brood were only a few days old in the nest the adult female disappeared. It couldn't have got any worse for the male as the summer of 2012 leading up to the London Olympics was a complete wash-out, the male struggled to find food and subsequently time to keep the chicks warm. We supplemented his food supply every day with mealworms. It was clear during the very worst of this weather they were totally dependant on this supplementary food as he would fly alongside the car on the Common to take our free offerings for his youngsters. Happily this strategy worked and he was able to rear at least three youngsters from the second brood single-handedly. In the Autumn of 2013 we photographed him with a new female. Sadly after heavy late snow in March 2013 our hero male did not return, although the new female did breed on the territory in Spring / Summer 2013 with a new male.
