The Vestry record for the Upper Parish (southern part) of Nansemond County contains an entry for John Stokes. A John Stoakes was the agent for the passage of Thomas Boyle from Bristol England to Virginia in 1667. An order to prossesion bounds of land was made on 31 AUG 1747. The land was bounded by James Copeland and John Stokes. Also listed in the Vestry records of the Upper Parish are Thomas Stokes and William Stokes. The names are also indexed as Stockes, Stocks and Stakes. Because of the date range this is not likely the same John Stoakes of 1667 but it places the Stokes family in the same area as Thomas Boyte.
