Jonah Yates was a son of Joseph and Malinda (Swain) Yates. He married Harriet Holloway on 22 Feb 1849 in Thomas County, Georgia. They were the parents of Martha, Clayton, Mary and Emil Yates. Jonah served as a private in the Brooks County (Georgia) Militia, 81st Batt. He later moved to Florida, became the first mayor of Plant City, and one of the "cattle kings" of Hillsborough County (he owned approximately 1000 head in 1882).
