Bryce Stratton used to deliver our bread until he stopped baking when WWII started. He made the best Lardie Cake I have ever tasted.

This was one of 2 village shops in Ecchinswell. The other being the Post Office Stores. This one was known as STRATTON'S STORES. Originally it had a bakery out the back, though this was probably only in use until around World War II. It was run by Bryce Stratton and his wife. He was familiar for wearing a straw hat, and in winter, a long (ankle-length)brown leather coat. He delivered his groceries in a Bedford (I think,) van. Because the shop sold Paraffin, everything else tasted and smelled of it!!! There was a enamelled sign hanging outside, saying 'YOU MAY TELEPHONE FROM HERE'way before people had private telephones - never mind mobiles!!! Just imagine - 2 shops in Ecchinswell!!! And then there were none...........
