When we cut off the existing Ford mounting brackets, we got into the axle tube too deeply in a number of spots. As our technique improved, this problem went away. But one of the tubes had numerous "cosmetic" defects. I bought a cheap flux welder and have been learning how to use it. I really have no idea what I am doing. So far, it's weld, grind, repeat. But the results so far are a vast improvement over the cuts...
