Gorgeous Gorget

San Francisco, CA

Only male hummingbirds possess a gorget, or collar, of iridescent feathers.
Favorable lighting conditions will produce the brilliant colors, otherwise they will appear dark.
In this Allen's hummingbird, the colors are a golden orange. With other species, colors will vary.
The gorget can be moved independently of the neck feathers to flash signals to other hummingbirds.

Great image, maybe he is even flashing a signal to you the photographer.. I have never seen an image of a hummingbird showing quite the complexity of their feathers or their ability to move them independently. Thanks for sharing. Vote
