The Pacific Coast is well known for its variety and numbers of the delicately colored sea slugs. Nudibranch means "naked gill" because the gills are exposed on the back, rather than hidden as in the sea hare. Many of the nudibranchs produce a chemical with a fruity odor that is responsible for its protection in the tidepools. Fishes which swallow nudibranchs will quickly eject them.
