Feather Boa Kelp (Egregia laevigata)

Point Loma

This brown algae is very common in the lower intertidal areas. The plants consist of many elongate stout stipes with hundreds of small blades arising along the edges of the stipe. Some of the blades have basal bulb-like floats.
