Periwinkle (Littorina sp.)

Point Loma

These small, grazing, drab-colored snails are often found clustered together along crevices and small depressions. They will drown if forced to remain under water and need only an occasional saltwater spray to keep their gills moist. Notice the operculum (horny door) which is attached to the foot. When the foot is withdrawn, the operculum will block the entrance to the shell.
