Acorn Barnacle (Balanus glandula)

Point Loma

This small species of barnacle is one of the most abundant animals of the splash zone. These creatures, housed in a thick conical shell, are related to the crabs and the shrimp. At extreme high tide, the barnacle will open its inner shell composed of four plates and sweep the water with its feet for particles of food.
