_MG_0518-web.jpg

This image was taken with two Kenko PRO300 DG 1.4x TC’s in place for a total focal length of 1000mm and aperture of f/11 (the lens was stopped down 2/3 of a stop)

This is a web-sized version of my final post-processed image

So far I have not been as successful with any 1.4x TC on the 100-400 IS as I would have liked. My best success has been with the Kenko PRO 300 DG 1.4x. Removing the pins doesn’t seem to help the AF performance but with them gone I don’t have to worry about the tape coming off. If I had it to do over again I probably wouldn’t bother with removing the pins and just use tape. My best results with the 100-400 w/1.4x TC have been with an actual aperture between f/11 and f/16. Stopping down about one stop really helps with the clarity of the pictures but you generally need a lot of light.

I hope this helps,

Greg

Greg,
Thanks for the answer and I really enjoyed your latest Red-eyed Vireo.
If you don't mind, which 1.4 teleconverter would you recommend for the Canon 100-400L (XT)?. I don't do many birds in flight.
Was it better for you to remove the pins?

Thank you

This picture was actually taken without support from a tripod. I was sitting with the lens resting on my knee. I was able to autofocus since I removed the three pins from the teleconverters so the lens was not aware of their presence.

very nice detail and color specially considering the TCs.
did you use mirror lookup? was it really hard to focus manually?

thanks
