I should have added that the American Coot I photographed was in North Lakes Park (and its larger of two lakes), Denton, Texas.

I photographed an American Coot earlier this afternoon and could not find what the bird's name was after perusing three of the field guides I'm using. Your site provided the answer because my photograph of the American Coot looks much like yours. Thanks for solving the mystery. :)
