I can recall that in early 1967 me and a friend were in a jeep heading to Long Binh and decided to pull off Hwy 1 to get a closer look at the temple that was near this memorial. We were standing there admiring the temple when a rifle round whizzed just above our head. We were back in the jeep and peeling out rather quickly. That was my last visit to the temple. I have often wondered if it was "Charlie" taking a pot shot at us, or just one of our guys having some fun with a couple of tourists. Anyway, thanks for the flash-back Dave. (I guess.) I have enjoyed your photos.

This memorial was torn down by the commies after they took over. It is just down the hill from the Buddhist temple which is still there and under expansion in 1995 when I was there. The cemetery is still there. Not far down that road is a Buddhist monastery, newly expanded in 95.
It was in Vietnam along their Highway 1 and marked the gate of the military cemetery. The communist government destroyed it when the country fell.

I wonder a bit stupidly if this memorial is in America or in Vietnam ?
Because it would be surprising the Vietnam communist government tolerates it.
In fact I don't get if Highway 1 is the vietnamese one or if it is elsewhere.

This is not just a memorial to ARVN soldiers, it also the gate of the ARVN cemetery a few kilometers behind it...
