A great deal of the Lai Khe basecamp was built in an unused part of the Michelin Rubber Plantation. Many of the old French buildings were used by the Army. The shade of the rubber trees was nice to have on hot days (just about the only kind we had, but when incoming rockets hit, as hundreds did during the Tet Offensive in '68, the trees presented more of a hazard. You could be killed by a rocket that hit a tree a hundred yards away.
