Army Commendation Medal awarded for saving lives at the Battle of Ong Thanh on 17 Oct, '67, at which more than 60 American soldiers were killed, died of wounds or MIA (Body Not Recovered), and at least another 80 soldiers wounded in action. As David Maraniss discovered while researching his book "They Marched Into Sunlight", in large part about the Battle of Ong Thanh, the First Infantry Division Commander, MG John Hay was awarded a Silver Star Medal for the battle, even though he played no part in it. Unfortunately, that "ticket punching" was prevalent among the senior leaders, and even some of the junior officers.
