When I got to Vietnam at the end of March '67, I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. From there, they sent me to the 2/2nd Infantry (Mechanized). I spent the first few months working out of the Battalion Aid Station while I learned my craft. During that time I was used as a "loaner" medic for a few short stints (a week with 2/34th Armor, and 2 weeks with Charlie Co.) before being assigned to a rifle platoon in Bravo Co. In early Sept. '67 I moved to the Bravo Co. medic track. In the middle of September I was transferred to 2/28th Infantry, a leg infantry unit.
Riding the tracks had it's hazards. We had a number of soldiers killed or wounded from mines and booby-traps. However, even though we did walking patrols at times, the comfort level in riding over longer distances made it a lot easier than carrying everything we owned on our backs, which we did in the leg units.
