Front Porch *

Atlanta, Georgia USA

This photo was taken in Cabbagetown, a neighborhood in Atlanta consisting of "cottages" built in the 1890's for Appalachian millworkers brought to the area to work in the cotton and textile mills. After the mills closed in the 1970's, it went into a decline, and most of the tight-knit group of families have moved away. More recently, however, young urbanites have begun moving into the area and rehabbing the old homes, which still retain a flavor of a more rural Southern past. We spoke with one man yesterday who still raises a few chickens, which are free to wander through the neighborhood.

Yes, it does have a fall feeling. We had just flown down from up North expecting heat, but all we got was rain and unseasonably cool weather. I suppose it was better than sweltering in humidity.

Mary Anne, great composition and wonderful colors! For some reason it has a very "fall" feeling about it - deserted chairs, rain, leaves blowing across the porch. The people are probably inside drinking hot cocoa...
Very beautiful!

Beautiful color and right light. How was your Atlanta trip. Although I live in ATL, I have never been to the place you visited. Looking at this, I feel I must go there once. -Cat

Beautiful colours and composition and regarding the topic of refelctions this works as i find the sudjued reflections from the timber give this a feeling of warmth and humidity.

Thank you for your kind comments, folks. To Lee... my husband and I were visiting our son for the weekend. He's renting a house in Cabbagetown (not this one)...just moved there from an apt. in Poncey-Highlands in April. I love the area where he is now--it has a nice but quirky neighborhood feel. I thought of looking you up but didn't know how. Maybe next time.
