This photo was taken in Cabbagetown, a neighborhood in Atlanta consisting of "cottages" built in the 1890's for Appalachian millworkers brought to the area to work in the cotton and textile mills. After the mills closed in the 1970's, it went into a decline, and most of the tight-knit group of families have moved away. More recently, however, young urbanites have begun moving into the area and rehabbing the old homes, which still retain a flavor of a more rural Southern past. We spoke with one man yesterday who still raises a few chickens, which are free to wander through the neighborhood.
