This is a metallic wood borer. Most attack only dead or dying trees, though some
lay eggs on healthy trees and the larvae bore into the tree eventually killing it.
Thankfully it wasn't the emerald ash borer, an invasive species which is
killing millions of otherwise healthy ash trees across the Northeast, Midwest, Ontario and Quebec.
