Thanks, Bob. LOL Yah, it would work. You probably could do it with a pocket knife, tho (eeeeuuh!, [fingernail scratches chalkboard] the thought makes me squirm in my chair!), ... if you knew what you were doing ":^). I had lifepixel.com do it for me. Haha, they do sell DIY kits for those who DIY (on a 5D?!?!). Also, thanks for the inspiration; I haven't tried it on astro-pix, tho, I seem to remember somewhere that IR is good that. My first instinct is that it wouldn't be as susceptible to visible light generated in this atmosphere (AKA light-pollution). Maybe it was reading about the EOS-20Da, but not sure. Cheers, -mikey

That's a pretty 'specco' image Mikey! Thanks for the explanation, it makes it even more interesting. I am wondering if I use a razor blade to scratch off the IR filter from my 5D sensor, could I produce similar effects?

Must try it? Should get better 'Astro' pics?

Great comp, love it! ~Regards Melbob

Thanks for the kind words and the second look, Trav. I'm glad you like the image. The "cage" is at the edge of a dry pond (depression between cage and trees) and protects livestock from falling into a large vertical drain pipe. The "grass" in the foreground is actually pond vegetation. Haha, well, on the equipment; I'd be lost without it ":^). This is an infrared-only modified D30 and it definitely had something to do with the look of this image.

As for the 18-55, its pretty sharp at the smaller apertures .. AND ... its the *cheapest* lens canon makes, so I didn't worry that much about taking off the -S so it would work with the D30. The good thing about this lens for this camera is that on the less expensive or older lenses, Canon didn't use all the latest fancy color coatings, so it (cheaper color coating) doesn't react with the infrared light waves and produces a 'normal' image exposure. All my newer/better lenses make a big white spot in the middle of the image when used with this cam.

Cheers and thanks again, -mikey

I would add that you did this with the el cheapo 18~55 lens, which I own also. Which goes to prove it is the photographer...not the equipment. On second look, I like this better than even the first go round. Best Wishes, Traveller

This is really an exceptional treatment, Michael. Immediately I thought, this could win it all...but what is the cage for? Or trap? Just what is it and where is it and why is it?

Just curious.
