Thanks for the summation. Funny how each image has unique challenges - wouldn't have thought about the constant chewing! LOL! Again, really lovely feel to this. ~ Lonnit

Hello, everyone. Thanks for the comments!

This is all natural. No Photoshop work other than to crop it a bit, reduce its size (resample it down) and then apply a tad of sharpening followed by the frame and conversion to JPG.

I processed it in DPP from the RAW. I used the "shade" white balance setting, "standard" picture style, color tone = 0, saturation = 0, brightness = 0, and sharpness set to 2 just to deal with the AA filter a bit.

But I did pull the white point down and push the black point up to brighten things a bit and give it more contrast than it would have had. This was really "flat" lighting. Talk about dull!

We're overrun by bunnies right now where my office is and the other day I decided to shoot a few shots of some of them. Unfortunately, I'd let it get too late and the sun was down below the near horizon so it was just too dark to shoot at anything but wide open on the lens at ISO 400. The EXIF is one hour too early because I have not reset the camera for daylight saving time.

The IS saved me because this was shot at 1/40th at 300mm hand held. The blur and look of the shots I got surprised me, actually. But I was counting on good blurring because the background would have been fairly displeasing if it was in focus.

I spent a reasonable amount of time on my belly trying to get a decent perspective on this little guy and letting him get more used to my presence. In the end, he ventured so close to me that I could not zoom out wide enough to get all of him into the frame even at 70mm.

The thing that I found is that rabbits are constantly chewing. And their little bunny faces move rapidly. So at slow shutter speeds, even though the IS helps with my camera shake, the movements of the bunny's mouth cause their face and whiskers to be blurred even if their eyes are dead sharp. They yank out a few blades of grass and then just chew and pull them in until they're gone. It's kind of amusing to watch.

Anyhow, what you're seeing is just the blur of this lens at 300mm at f/5.6 (wide open for it) along with the somewhat subdued light provided by the sky just after the sun has set below the hills that were directly behind me - the shot is looking more or less due east.

Wovely wittle bunny wabbit. Is the DOF natural or PS? I'm figuring it's PS since it appears that there is no ground in focus at the same distance as Mr. Fuzzy. Just a question, not by any means a criticism. I wouldn't change a hare. ~ Lonnit

Fabulous, perfectly focused, fantastic DOF. One of those shots I always wish I had taken. Jim H2

This is adorable Jim, and very fitting for the title! The DOF is perfect as are the bits of grass he is munching on. CJ

Me too, it's a wonderful shot with lots of character. Your chosen literature gives me a smile. -Michael
