12th Place~Empty Spaces~mlynn

Well, it began as either a homage to Georgia O'Keeffe, or an effort at metaphysical painting (could have gone either way).
Instead, it took a left turn somewhere and I don't know what to call it.

Very striking, Melanie. Frayed is my favorite piece from you in this challenge for exactly the reasons Traveller has stated, but this one is very effective and packs a visual wallop. -Michael

Melanie, your imagination, photographry and PP skills are so good I'm beginning to turn green with envy! Great metaphysical O'Keefe! CJ

When I was taking an Art Design class last year, one of our projects involved making collages with pictures from various magazines. Using simply foreground, middle ground, and background, we had to combine seemingly disparate images to make some kind of a statement. With my X-acto knife and rubber cement, I could put together a striking collage, but never in a thousand years could I construct something like this with my own photos and Photoshop. Most impressive...a classic!

Melanie, your creativity is on a completely different plane (!) than mine - way above, I mean. Not in a thousand years would I have been able to dream up a way of composing three such different shots into one. Amazing. Regards jnconradie

This is fantastic, Melanie! Just what we have grown to expect from you! Traveller may have been referring to the cloud motif which you use so well. I enjoyed reading about your thought process in producing your images, you are definitely my idea of an artist! ~Sharon

Thank you Traveller and Kiki. And thank you to High Anxiety II as well; I went to revisit her to refresh my memory, but she seems to be gone :(. Traveller, you mean you want me to think? That's really something I try to avoid as often as I can.

Frayed popped into my head on Monday while at work, complete and finished. It is, in a way, a representation of my life in general at this point in time. I already had the screen image, so when I arrived home that afternoon I started working on the figural part. But the light was crappy...etc. I had difficulty with both the lighting and the hair, but compositionally it was what I envisioned.

Empty Spaces started out as most of my composites do; playing with various shapes until I think of how I want them to go. I had a vague idea of a Georgia O'Keeffe type thing, or a metaphysical type thing, a symbolic thing...whatever. I think I always intended for it to be at least quirky, perhaps humorous, and as it ends up--possibly even a bit cynical. At one point I was thinking of using shapes with similar characteristics (for example...the top of a rabbit shaped box--with the long ears...empty things). Then I remembered an image I took a couple of days ago of a jet stream, and decided to use that instead. Natural shapes, natural (empty) landscape, and the increasingly ever-present evidence of human technology. I think that's about it...

Motifs? I only just stole this skull off of a co-workers desk on Tuesday--so had never photographed it before. Antlers maybe, but not this guy...:) [PS: I left a note...]

Now that we can finally talk...lol...Melanie,(this having all of your Motifs present), while this may be technically better than Frayed, it does not have the heart of the other image.

While this is lovely, it does not tug at me...and this is why I feel that Frayed is a step above.

What are your feelings on this image? compare and contrast with Frayed if you could.

Best wishes, Traveller
