8th Place~Portrait of a Farmer-'Russell Drysdale'~Melbob

And I fibbed about the camera ... it was my 1D Mk II N
This was inspired by Russell Drysdale's "The Drover's Wife"
However the subdued colours and rough brush strokes gave way to bright 'luminous' colours and a more 'realism' portrait... I liked it better that way!

I tried a number of filter effects but they did not suit in my opinion. So this was the final result. I added the tree to help guide the eyes along the leading lines to the endless dry and sunburned countryside... the struggle of a modern day farmer.

Tom you are spot on , I had Dali in mind and also Drysdale, so the extremes are Dali inspired for sure, thanks for commenting, and thanks also Melanie, it will be a challenge reproducing those colours and 'luminance' in oils, if/when I finally get around to doing that. ~ Regards Melbob

Thanks Traveller and Michael. This is getting closer to what I really like doing with photography. I originally shot farmer George on site but wanted the image to better portray the stark reality of the current drought and the extreme dryness of this area. Needed to really apply some extremes to the background then patch a more 'real' George back into his farm. Otherwise I could have just shot this as one original. Many of the other 'extreme' PP posts are 'the journey' from novice through the 'learning curve' to hopefully, one day, accomplished. I will then commit these to oils on canvas when I'm happy with them. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I just read the posts about Julie's situation and I wholeheartedly concur with you Traveller in wishing Julie all the strength and good furtune at this difficult time and my prayers are with her as also. ~ Regards Melbob

OK... I admit the Aussie artist was a give-away! That tree base did bug me a little as well so played a little more to fix that. This is a composite of three photos taken in the challenge period. Farmer Brown (also a 'George') the landscape and that tree which I love to photograph just on the outskirts of Melbourne. Eye catching indeed.. . The crooked tree could take some slight blurring arond the lower end of the trunk, it looks a little detached but all in all nice work. Brave colors not least. I thought of PhotoKhan's "Fried Green Tomatoes" in challenge 88 right away..but australian artist.. Bob? (Who is Mel lol) kiki2

I enjoy this very much, composition, colour and concept. I am imagining this is Melbob, as not many others would think of this Aussie artist.
