Horsetail Falls, Yosemite National Park, located on the east buttress of El Capitan. During the last two weeks of February each year, the setting sun backlights Horsetail Falls producing a natural "firefall". The phenomenom was first photographed by Galen Rowell in 1973. It requires a clear evening and sufficient flow in the waterfall for the elusive effect to occur. According to a photographer at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite, the effect has only happened twice this year, once about 8 days ago and yesterday evening when I captured this image. Since Yosemite is now under a severe winter storm warning expecting 18 inches of snow, he doubted that there would be sufficient clear weather before the sunset changes position in the sky to capture the effect again this year. I got very lucky.
