11th Place Firefall by Michael Puff

Title from a 1994 movie also known by the title Freefall. Primary PP done with raw conversion in Adobe Camera Raw and then 10% "smart sharpen" in Photoshop CS2.

Horsetail Falls, Yosemite National Park, located on the east buttress of El Capitan. During the last two weeks of February each year, the setting sun backlights Horsetail Falls producing a natural "firefall". The phenomenom was first photographed by Galen Rowell in 1973. It requires a clear evening and sufficient flow in the waterfall for the elusive effect to occur. According to a photographer at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite, the effect has only happened twice this year, once about 8 days ago and yesterday evening when I captured this image. Since Yosemite is now under a severe winter storm warning expecting 18 inches of snow, he doubted that there would be sufficient clear weather before the sunset changes position in the sky to capture the effect again this year. I got very lucky.

Thanks Lee, CJ, Cat. Cat, I'm sure there's no water flow in Horsetail Fall during the fall months. It is fairly small (by Yosemite standards) and dries up by early summer. -Michael

This is just wonderful, Michael!
Hmmm, I wonder why it happens only once a year (shouldn't it be twice a year, the other time being last week of October and 1st week of November?) Just curious. Once possible explanation I can think of is too many fall leaves in the way, not sure. -Cat

Thanks all, appreciate the comments. Cindy, naw, you wouldn't have screwed it up. You handle special landscape moments with great aplomb. I will tell you that during the few minutes the light was just right, my 20D froze up and refused to respond. I quickly removed the battery, waited a few seconds, put the battery back in the camera and all was well. This has only happened to me once before and I was using the 100-400 under strong backlight conditions at that time as well. It was a nerve wracking moment but I stayed cool mostly because I didn't want to jump up and down screaming with all those other photographers standing around me, LOL! -Michael
