5th Place: Steam *

Not really painting with light.
Not a landscape at night (or blown out).
Does this really capture the spirit of the challenge?

Canon EOS 10D ,Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

Very well done! I love the tonality of the image, the steam and the contribution of the red light. -Roumen

Everything about this shot is fantastic - the steam is my favorite part; the red & red reflection also are. It would take a complete IDIOT or a photographer to place a tea kettle on the stove facing this way!!!!!!! LOL! Congratulations on a very well done image! ~ Lonnit

Hi Rob. This was shot with the lights out in the kitchen, with a flashlight pointing at the steam plume for illumination. The spillover from the light lit the rest of the scene. I'm pretty sure that my reflection is "behind" the flare on middle left side of the kettle. As for the kettle - got it at a local houseware's store (Bed Bath and Beyond) after I broke our previous kettle while the kitchen was being painted. Thanks for the kind words! -Ed Hahn

I like this shot, the tonal range is very good and the steam works well. Did you burn yourself out of the reflection? reason I ask is I did a shot today that had a kettle in it and hid behind my wife with only the camera popping out above her shoulder so i didn't show.

I also must ask where did you get that kettle, it is so cool - well hot?

all the best
Rob

The red is right! The few touches of red really stand out. The steam is what makes it great. Shu

Thanks Traveller - the burner isn't red because the tea kettle is too efficient at heat transfer. When I pulled the kettle off, the middle was red, but not the edges. -Ed Hahn

Dear Ed:

I think that this is an excellent image and the long exposure was necessary for the steaming effect. However, why isn't the electric burner glowing at least half red? Did you clone some of it out, or did the kettle just cover it?

Even more interestingly, their is a spot of red that Melanie missed...that on the top of the handle, indicating that this is a OXO tea kettle, one of the best out there and fairly expensive.

Ahhh, what we pick up from little clues.

A nice picture, really.

Best Wishes,
Traveller

Ah, Melanie...if you only knew just how dirty it really is. One advantage of taking photos in the dark, I guess. ;-) -Ed Hahn

I really like this. The steam creating a ray of light, and the bit of red from the light, its reflection, and the handle. Very nice. (Your stovetop looks much cleaner than mine :). --Melanie (mlynn)
