Thanks for your comments and suggestions, guys. I've reworked the image slightly and yes, I agree it's a better composition without taking away what I was originally trying to portray....a little girl against a big blue sky.
Your help is appreciated!
Gayle
Gayle: Nice. Great colors and clarity, and the gazing-upward perspective adds interest. The amount of background at the top creates a bit of a contradiction, though: The low shooting angle emphasizes height, while the low framing suggests the opposite. Just as an experiment, perhaps try a crop that (a) rotates your daughter 10 degrees more clockwise, and (b) trims some background off the top. A very strong portrait as-is, particularly from one who claims that "Portraiture is not really my thing". --Joe

Gayle, I have to agree with Olaf, this is fantastic. I think the only thing I would change is cropping a little off the top - not all, just a bit. Phil.

Portraiture not really your thing? What are you talking about? This is great! The angle and the central position of the face breaks the rules - but in good way. The low angle gave you a perfect background - not distracting and not boring. Perfect color combination with the subject being the coplimentory color to the background - still without being too much! You seem to have a natural talent for photography - period! Portraits not really your thing? Because of your talent and photographic eye, they'll come out great anyway!!! --Olaf
