Phantom Cranefly -- Bittacomorpha clavipes

K & P Trail @ Snow Road

found several Phantom craneflies in the damp tangle of vegetation
at the parking area of the K & P Trail near Snow Road. We've seen
them in the vegetation on several occasionas, and this seems to be
about the most reliable location that I know of for seeing this
species. The area is surrounded by wetlands and a creek. The vegetation
surrounding the parking area is a tangle of raspberry canes and woodbine,
but most notable is the wild sweet pea vines which grow in profusion.
The Phantom craneflies are often seen flying though this shade in
the midst of the vegetation, occasionally stopping to hang from a
leaf for a few seconds before flying onward. When in flight, they
are like 6-pointed drifting star shapes -- with the white sections
of their legs being the only visible parts.
