westwards from the chancel

before proceeding to the full splendour of the chancel east end, a couple of pics showing the wizardry that went into making the transition from mid C13th gothic to the complexities of the vaulting and effusive use of glass of the century after.

Whereas there is often a window above the chancel arch reducing the height of the nave, here it is the other way round and the chancel rises. Equally remarkably the crossing below the central tower is played down by the chancel vaulting sailing on with the final 2 bays below the tower. That leaves a fan of vaulting coming down nowhere, but a freestanding ogee arch leaps to meet it
