although this steeple retains the form of the late medieval original, about 1/3 the way up it changes from oak to pine, which was imported in huge quantities from the north Baltic after the navy of Nelson's era had stopped out the best of our oak. The slow growing redwood from above the arctic circle has very close annual rings and excellent structural properties. These torsion rods were nevertheless added in either the late C19th or maybe replaced in the 1950s
