The story goes that an old pub stood in the way of access/egress to proposed North Bourke Bridge. Common sense prevailed, the pub stayed in place and the sweeping curve you can see at the end of the bridge was constructed as a compromise and everyone was happy. The Bourke Bridge Inn now occupies the original site..
