Amanita-rubescens-5366.jpg

Babcock Property, Greenwich, CT

George knew this amanita immediately upon seeing it, Amanita rubescens! These days the woodlands are full of this beauty. The cap color of A. rubescens tends to be somewhat variable - ranging from whitish through rusty tan. It is typically covered with white to tannish cottony patches left over from the universal veil. The white stipe tapers outward toward the reddish bulbous base. A. rubescens bears a striate ring. Reddish spots may also be seen on the cap and on the gills where these have been bruised. No wonder its common name is 'The Blusher!'
