a log in a pond at the Binghamton University nature preserve. not sure how well this works, but I figured I'd give it a spin here.

This is a great idea. I see what you saw and what you were going for, but the log may be too close to the reflection of the trees in the frame so that there's no time for the eye to register a disconnect and get the sense of unreality you were going for.

Since you couldn't do that, I think this would have been a stronger shot with just the grass and the log running the full length of the frame and touching both top and bottom edges.

And yet it's still satisfying with the early fall colors at the top and the the muted colors in the foreground.

Works well, I think! Not only because of the unexpected perpective, but the colors are great, too.
