Diverted my journey today to take a look at Strodes College in Egham.
My elder brother was educated here when it was a grammar school (schools for the brainier kids). It did him good in those years between being 11 and 18, as he had to catch two trains to get there as well as a 20 minute walk to the nearest railway station. There were no mums with 4x4’s or SUV’s in those days.
In order to get there, he had to pass the Vickers factory at Brooklands, which at that time were building planes such as the VC10 long range airliner and the rather more humble Vanguard. That, together with an aeronautical club at the school got him interested in aircraft, and latterly he became an air traffic controller.
His interest then rubbed off on to me and that’s how my interest in photography began. So in a round about way, this building is somewhat significant to me!
