April 19 2005:
Another One Bites the Dust

view map

Its been a typical ‘April Showers’ day today. I decided to take a drive south of Guildford and discovered this old butcher’s shop in the village of Bramley.

A few butcher’s shops have tried to survive the onslaught of the ever-greedy supermarkets as we all support those monsters like lemmings and then complain at the character assassination of our town centres. Well, the butchers deserted our town centres years ago, but some, situated in small villages such as Bramley have tried to make a go of it by home deliveries, as well as good old-fashioned personal service.

Still, it looks as if Mr Grinstead has hung up his meat hook for the final time.

Talk about bleak!!!

A sad photo Ray. We too are heading for a time when all our shops are in concrete bunkers on the edge of towns - and then we'll wonder how we got to that situation.

A sign of the times

Oh, and I'll call them on the phone... maybe, who knows... ;-))

Nothing better than a good 1 inch thick beef filet, expecially when cooked by me...
I love animals, dead or alive.

.... and another veggie here - maybe it's OUR fault, and not Mr Sainsbury's :(
Guest 19-Apr-2005 19:17
Well, as a vegetarian I can't really get all choked up for the butcher, but it is very sad to see small shops go out of business due to large supermarkets and other superstores or malls. The level of service with the megastores in no way compares to that of small shops. Sad.

Excellent story and image Ray.

Yeah - I agree with Ric....and with you. Not that I've 'supported' butchers shops for many years but I do try to support the local greengrocer and baker.

I like the pictures on the tiles. Shows how happy the animals were before they got to the butchers I guess.

Nice capture Ray, unfortunately an all too familiar sight.
