June 16 2004:
All Change Please!

Marble Arch, London

Today I went up to London to photograph London’s famous Routemaster buses which are steadily being phased out. There are now 13 routes left and most, or even all of these may have gone by the end of next year. To think that they have been up in London since I was knee high to a grasshopper!

Here a couple wait at their terminus of Marble Arch at the corner of Hyde Park. Incidentally, this corner of the Park was being prepared for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers concert which takes place there this coming weekend.

I used to catch the 159 to get home from work! And my brother went to that concert!

Nice shot. Everytime I see one of these I want to sing that Smiths song I told you about.

These buses really are a symbol of London. They ought not to phase them out.

Well, preserved in photos I guess....We have a bunch of them in San Franciso, used to cart tourists around. Damned if I'd go on one....LOL!! And Larry's link is HILARIOUS!

Fabulous capture! I can't believe they are
being phased out.

Nice one Ray. It is strange how they look taller at the rear. I think it must be the long adverts at the back.

A precious image that will become history soon. No more hopping onto the platform, nor hopping off before the bus stops either. Sad.

Jim.

Oh no I can't believe they are getting rid of them. I loved riding in them during my visit in London. I also hear they are getting rid of the phone booths. What do you brits have against RED???? :)

when I envision England, this is one of the icons I picture . . . it's a shame they are disappearing

God the memories, I used to live on Streatham Common a long time ago.

Don't what London will do without them. A moving landmark.

How can London run without these? Nice catch.
Here in San Diego I see several old ones being used to transport tourists etc.

It's nice to see this intact! These poor folks got more for their money, and a little scare.... http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1756&e=3&u=/040616/481/wxs10606160012
