Today, Guildford held its ‘Running Day’, where a selection of old buses run on a selection of local routes. A sufficient number of local buses have been preserved and so that these routes can be faithfully recreated.
Reminding us of the days when we had conductors who stood on the rear open platform of those double deckers, this man is just about to signal to the driver that it’s now OK to depart. He was actually operating London Transport route 436, which I used so many times as a child; I remember how uncomfortable these old buses were as they had to be specially designed to go under lower than normal bridges, meaning that you were prone to bang your head on the ceiling!
