April 7 2004:
Beard and Lippy

Guildford

I took a trip into nearby Guildford today for some people shots. Being a university town and just before Easter I thought I might get more than just shoppers. I had barely arrived when I saw this person sitting on a bench. Wary whether to photograph or not, I decided to approach them and ask for permission, which was granted with ease.

I was then nabbed by some Market Research people, which resulted in me telling them how I wasn’t at all interested in any promotions offered when buying McCain’s Oven Ready Chips. In the end, the market researcher began to answer the questions herself – I was that predictable! Anyway, 20 minutes work paid for my train ticket and next photo magazine.

I then went on to shoot a few more photos in the afternoon which you will find in my Candids gallery.

I was very pleased my subject agreed to the photo being taken. Please don’t be too cruel in your remarks.

Great shot! I'd love to know his story. Is his white hair real? It's sooo white.

Nicely done Ray - great subject? Really very well done? And you didn't want the Oven Chips?? - can't say as I blame you after what I heard once (can't repeat here)

I don't think this could have been planned any better... Well done Ray!

Interesting photo Ray and it's always nice to ask permission and have it granted. Looking at the photo, I would be interested in what he is thinking at the time you took his picture. I also think that the brick background works well with this.

What an awsome subject matter. Great Portrait Ray. I wonder what their story is.

This is a wonderful photo. Not sure though, if he is happy or not :)

What a character! At first i thought you added that hair and lipstick, but I see it is authentic. Yes, as Jeanne says, courage is hard to muster up sometimes asking permission...I asked a street guy for permission in Santa Barbara and he said yes as long as I gave him a "donation" for his favorite liquid charity!! Your efforts here really paid off!

I think this is very well done! Takes a bit of courage to go up and ask for permission to photograph someone, but I find I rarely have someone say no. Nice job, very well done and sensitively treated!

I feel he would be quite interesting to talk with. Certainly does not conform does he?

Now on to look at your others.
