February 27 2004:
Take a butchers at this

Haslemere, Surrey

There aren't too many small butchers shops around anymore, especially in the south east of England here. To keep in business, they rely on personal service and quite a lot of home delivery. I popped inside and they explained that the shop had been largely unchanged for the last 70 years. You still pay at a separate kiosk in the shop, where an elderly lady sat with an old fashioned mechanical cash register. In case of any Trading Standards officers see this photo, I have changed the prices to shillings and pence in PS! I've tried to give an old time feel here also by using a hint of Gaussian Blur.

I love the deco front of the shop - and I agree with Jeanne, I'll bet the butcher would love a copy of this!

Nice idea for the prices - shame about the slow painful demise of many of these shops - like bakers, ironmongers and newsagents - all going the way of the 'man'

Fabulous shot, one small point, the TV aerials are more up to date than the prices!
I used to work in a butchers when I left school, it brought back some memories.

Outstanding image and post-processing work, Ray - REALLY love the old-time feel you've captured here. The moody sky in the background adds a perfect touch to the photo.

I find that if there is any noise in the image the desaturate method increases it, but the greyscale method smooths it.

Nice pic.

Pepe,
There is more than one way of applying sepia but I used it using the Duotone method.
>Image>Mode>Grayscale
>Discard Color Info>OK
>Mode>Duotone
>Click on Ink Color #2
>Select desired Pantone color>OK
>Mode>RGB color

Altenatively, but not so good
>Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation
>Hue
and use Hue slider bar until you have the right color.

As soon as I saw Bells I was interested.
A jolly good capture of a First Class shop.
Were you the "Boy Raymond?"

How cool is that . .and you succeeded in the old timey feel. Did you take a copy back to the owners? I'll bet they'd love to see it matted. I'd have to go buy something there just because . . .it's too cooool not to. Do you think you can get some inside shots sometime??

you've succeeded with the ole time feeling. Great shot Ray.

Everyone expressed it - Ditto!

The sepia and blur are very effective. Prices and quantities aside, as though I would have noticed that, this looks to be a genuinely old photo. Gets a vote.

Beautiful!! The toning and the overall feel really DOES make it look like it was shot long ago. Splendid.

I like this picture. How do you apply the sepia color?

Very nice!

I like the old time feel to this photo but it fails on authenticity ;-) If it were a 1930 image the prices are too high, and a 40's photo wouldn't have had this much meat to show!
