Belisha Beacon

view map

Chobham, Surrey

The Belisha Beacon was named after the Minister of Transport who oversaw the introduction of them in 1934. It is an illuminated orange sphere mounted on a pole at each side of a pedestrian crossing. Here in Britain, the whole set-up is called a 'Zebra Crossing' because of the black and white markings on the road.

At Zebra crossings, there are no red or green rights and the motorist is obliged to stop when a pedestrian stands at the crossing. Over the past 30 or 40 years, many controlled crossings have been introduced featuring the customary red and green lights. These are generally called Pelican Crossings.

End of Lesson!

Yes - and those Pelican interlopers are partly responsible for the erosion of common courtesy and the general slide into ignorance and arrogance of the British motorist. Bring back the orange balls! :o))
