John McQueen Johnston, 1872-1927

Plantagenet, Ontario, CANADA

John McQueen Johnston, 1872-1927

Son of John McQueen Johnston, 1843-1917, son of Robert "Red Robin" Johnston and Mary "May" Frances McQueen.

Photographer: A stamp on the reverse indicates "C.B.Taggart, (illegible) Photograph And Copying House, Wellington St Cor Bank, Ottawa, Ont.." Taggart did not open for business until 1889.

There was a time when I thought that this image was a copy of an earlier tintype of John McQueen Johnston Sr.. I now have in my possession a photograph of John Jr. as an older man. Comparison of the 2 images confirms that this image is of John Jr..

The names of John's parents, John & Susannah Johnston, are written on the reverse of the image.

Genes are interesting critters. I can remember talking one day with my Dad about the way my hair had a wave in the front that was almost impossible to do anything with unless I kept my hair cut short. Dad said that he had the same thing. When he was a teenager he discovered that when he combed his hair straight back that the wave didn't take over. In this photo John has the same hair wave in front. I wonder how many other Johnston men have fought that "thing" all of their lives...lol...

John's father John was the first surviving male child of Red Robin and May. There had been a previous son who had died in infancy. John was named in honor of his grandfather John McQueen, May's father. I can remember stories about John Sr. and his fiery temper. It is said that he had a constant feud running with his neighbors and was never happier than when they were going at it. As for his family, he is said to have been very kind and gentle with his children - good thing as he and Susannah had 13 children.
