Thomas Graves (#34) - work in progress

Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA

Thomas Graves, b. 1844.

Husband of Janet Johnston. From the 1881 Ontario census we know that Thomas was a policeman in Ottawa; however, he was not a city policeman. He was a policeman for the Canadian Pacific Railroad.

Is Thomas Graves the brother of John B. Graves?

Here Thomas is shown wearing what I believe to be a Masonic sash. Where the sash comes together under his right arm at his side there is a circular "badge" containing a 5-pointed star.

The condition of this tintype is best described as "rough". As I removed the dust, scratches, etc. his trousers were just a black mass along with most of the chair and the right side of the image. The background to the right was evidently a narrow-pleated drape. I found a piece about 4 pleats wide and 3/8" long, cleaned it up and just replicated it. There comes a time when one just has to "call it quits" on a family photo. This may be it.

A tintype image in an advanced state of deterioration. Partial restoration only. The tintype image measures 2-7/16"x3-1/2". full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto
