Esther (Curle) Johnston, ca. 1846 - 1879, wife of Archibald Johnston
Esther was born in New York on January 11 to William Curle and Phebe Bray who later moved to Michigan. Archibald and Esther married in 1872. As beautiful as Esther was she was equally frail. Archie and Esther had a daughter Alice in 1873. Sadly, Esther died in 1879 shortly after giving birth to a second daughter who also died. She was said to have been a very talented clothier. If you look at her top very carefully you will see that there are no seams. It evidently was crochetted by hand according to one source, a textile designer.
I believe that the Curle family was of Swedish Viking descent.
