Craigieburn Engraving

This is a print made from a steel engraving. The print was sold in Scotland from ca. 1839-1842.

The artist made an obvious attempt to convey an air of darkness and mystery in this image; however, the house itself is in a lovely clearing where the sun shines in. There is a wee burn rushing nearby - a source of refreshing drinking water. None of the trees appear to be very old. Perhaps the land was cleared of old growth trees first for their valuable lumber, and then they were allowed to grow back. Their twisted growth is indicative of harsh storms.
