During Elementary school (late 50's - early 60's) I remember great Chinese food from a place not very far from school. It was located on Piggot Ave. in Centerville (Alorton). There was also great Chinese food in Brooklyn, Ill. Shrimp St. Pauls and Shrimp Fried Rice were my favorites. I even learned how to prepare the St. Pauls when I couldn't find them in Tulsa. I also loved shrimp from Scotia's Restaurant. Have not been able to find that "taste treat" anywhere else!

I lived in ESL from around 76-79 and there was some good Chinese food then

did you know that in 1961 or 1961 President Kennedy named East St. Louis city of the year?I remember when the streets were full of shops...Seidels, Woolworth,Kreske, Wal-Green's....the artechiture on the old buildings is just breathtaking...St. Mary's and Christian Welfare were the two big hospitals ( I would wager that at least 75% of people born in the 50's and 60's were born at one of these hospitals)...the rich, vast and diverst history of this grand old lady is now overshadowed by the crime, drugs and sheer poverty that run rampant...but it also has it's dark side...it was also the site of one of the deadliest race riots that ever happened back in either 1910 or the 20's.....

I remember eating here while visiting in the early 80's. Me and my sisters were crazy about the pork fried rice. I also was disturbed by what seemed to presumptions: the way everything was non-personal, simply to make money without personal interaction. The behind plastic windows (bullet proof) push out draws for giving product and receiving cash--just pure alienation. Maybe too many robberies. When I asked about it, I was simply told that's just the way things are-these days! My wonderful aunts who still reside in ESL, always told stories that had positive worth in them. Such as how beautiful Washington Park use to be etc. I like these picture, they remind me of my roots (I was born in ESL at Christian Welfare Hospital 1968, but raised in Orange County California, two opposite extremes) home is where home is. East St. Louis is still beautiful and full of history. East St. Louis aka Little Egypt

I don't remember any chinese places in estl, unless you count those one's that pop up on state st. back in the late 70's.I lived there from 66 to 81.My father use to take us to a REAL chinese restaurant in Brooklyn. That Brooklyn,IL.Right down the road. The last time i was there was in 05.I cried at want i seen.I did't even reconize my own street. They had torn down so many buildings that i was confuse were i was.As i looked at my street i notice 2 business had survive, the chinese place that pop up in the late 70's and the liquor store. Can't blame this mess on the white folks.

It has been a long time but I can still remember this place shown in the picture. We were really sold a bill of goods that was against our health. The fried shrimp fried rice and other foods sold to is was loaded with soy sauce beyond what one could imagine(not knowing)the food was literally black with sauce and saturated.

After graduating from Lincoln in the class of 1957 I enlisted in the USNavy, that's when I found out what real chinese food was all about, and many other exotic foods from various parts of the world before my retirement in
1976. Looking at those pictures sparks a flame that bring about many memories some good and some bad, but yet memories of things that took place while living there( after all it was home) born and reared as my English teachers would admonish us to say. Was born at 1244 Broadway upstairs 4blocks from the old Lincoln which later became Hughes Quinn, went to John Robinson grade school . Lived upstairs on Piggott across the street from Lincoln park and Banjos candy store(peanut brittle...yummy) . When I was a kid we were not permitted to go to the Majestic theatre, only to Deluxe...Harlem...Broadway shows for a dime.

Stayed up all night not too long ago to read quite a few of the comments made by many people who were from
East St Louis. I can identify with many of the places and certain situations that have taken place,a lot of the pele I cant remember or even know because I left at an early age after graduating only returning to attend the funerals of my father, sister, and aunt, last time there was in 84 still have a brother and sister there, one on each side of the river.Presently living in San Diego Ca.There are many many East St Louis migrants here especially in The San Fernando Valley area. I stumbled across the web site by accident in 2007 and I think all the complaining needs to be directed at rebuilding this city. It has a hidden treasure that we have to find.

I'd rather eat in CHINA than in ESL! This is a disgrace

Hello, I was born and raised in E.St.Lo, "If I could buy every building in Down town ,I certainly would. I remember eating at the Chinese Place, coming up State street, getting off the bus waiting for the 38 Washington Park. I am presently living in Atlanta,Georgia, but I still have fond memories of my childhood there in E.St.Lo. Working together, with faith in Almighty God, we can all play a part in rebuilding our city. Hey Shirley you know instead of wasting a bunch of time complaining about every picture on this site, you could take your own advice and do something to help your city.
Guest 27-Mar-2010 16:39
All of these pictures look like something 'post apocalypse.' Everyone has everthing boarded up and bars on the doors -- clearly sending a message of fear.

I got outta Dodge a long time ago. And could care less about coming back.

I came back from the navy in 55 there was no jobs then.

What would it take for this business owner to paint this building?
Guest 15-Sep-2009 18:13
We, for those who care, live here because we see a vision of East St Louis and a remedy for the plagues of littering, drug trafficking and abandonment of vacant buildings which is swarming the city. The remedy for this plague is a strong government willing to fight for East St Louis.
Shirley A Johnson 15-Sep-2009 18:00
East St Louis is my home and I still want to live here because we are in the valley of despair and looking up to a new day that is coming to my city. I willingly pick up trash on the streets because I reIuse to live in a neighborhood littered by unnecessary "I could careless". It is going to take us to care, run out the drug dealers and make the owners of these abandoned buildings accountable for the clearing of the lots on which their abandoned buildings and industry stand. If these buildings are detrimental to the health of the citizens, then tear them down. Why is this so hard to do?
stanly drummond 18-Jun-2009 21:12
stan the man hello to my little friend i think east st louis need more love for one another

To the guest that wants to know why people still want to live here. I think East St. Louis is just a place called home. Though I love this place because this is where I grew up, I wouldn't raise my family here. I have alot of bad memories from the Boogie and I have lots of good memories. People can't throw away where they come from. It is just a fact. I have watched other towns bloom and then fail. Yea the Boogie isn't known for its clealinest, but it is known for all the crime, but that can't change the hearts of the people that resided there.I wish I could find the people that I went to school with there. It has been hard, but in due time, they will surface.
