I was in a artillery unit in the Army but it was ADA, sending out thousands of rounds of 20mm to knock down low flying aircraft that made it thru the first line of missle defense protecting Frankfort and the Fulda gap. But since I was reassigned to base security right after being transferred in I never got to see them fire. Maybe a good thing, my hearing is bad enough as it is these days.

Anyway I was thinking the castle was like 2 or more miles from the sea unless Dave is right and the Scottish are like the Chinese and building artificial land. Paul

Maybe the sea was farther away 100 years ago.
Are all those cranes adding land to Edinburgh?

I am no authority on gunnery, as my Navy time was mostly spend in Engineering. But I understand that a range of 1500 yards or more is not out of the question. That does appear to be insufficient to hit a ship, judging only on the perspective of this image. Also, considering the difference in elevation, I think a cannon ball will be travelling at a significant speed by the time it hits its target.

Isn’t the castle quite some distance from the sea? I can’t imagine those canons having enough range to reach the coast little alone do much damage if the projectile got there. Paul

I do not know the cannon's range. But I am certain it was intended to defend against enemy war ships.

Very nice content and the framing is excellent. Paul

Really nice composition and execution. I like the view.
Did they say what the range of the canon was?

Nicely aimed at a church.

I love this image because it takes me there. I like the composition, the framing, of course and the subject. Traveller
