Evening Monsoon Storm

Green Valley, AZ

I love how these small monsoon storms can pop up, and go away in less than an hour. I caught this one as I was coming home about 5:30 pm. It was over in about 45 min. I am looking east towards the Santa Rita Mountains. The air temperature was about 102 deg.

Last night around 10:00 ish I went out to evaluate the pattern of a LED security light I put up for a local business earlier in the day. Much to my surprise there were storms brewing all around us and plenty of lightning photo opportunities were present if I'd had my camera and tripod with me. And some of them were pretty dang photogenic too. Missed that opportunity. Paul

Hi Traveller. Thanks for your comments. It is as real as it gets.
I don't think I ever had it in Eligible. I guess I put it here as a holding spot. I already have 4 in Eligible, and I am looking for/anticipating a better monsoon shot.
If nothing else develops within the week, I may move it there.

Jim, I don't know why you moved this from eligible...there is a great naturalism about this image, (for me)....it is not overly processed....there is nothing artificial about it, and so I do like it quite a lot...as being a very accurate representation of the natural world.

Do other people agree of disagree with this assessment of mine? Or, did I make too much of its naturalism?

A untrained person could mistake it for a tornadic cell but in storm spotter training the two primary things pound into you is lowering cloud base (wall cloud) and rotation. Paul

In AZ, these are called micro bursts.

Dave - it pretty much sat in the one spot for 45-60 minutes. There was a little drifting left and to the back. And it gradually thinned out and just went away.

As if the heavens opened. I wonder whether some mistake it for a tornado.

Its a great starting point and hopefully before you return your trip will be very successful. I do wish you luck and chasing storms is exciting business and I'm looking forward to seeing your captures. Paul
