A Tiger Rattlesnake

Desert Museum, Tucson, AZ

I was lucky enough to attend a photo workshop at the Desert Museum this weekend. One of the things we shot was this rattlesnake on both a white and a black background.
Note his tail is in rapid motion. He was not happy.

Dave - close. They can strike about 1/2 their body length. It was a bit over 3 ft in length.

Um, isn't that within striking range? You brave!

Nice image. Glad to see your lens was at full zoom. How far away were you?

Thanks guys.
Paul - the lighting was from a soft box mounted directly overhead. It had bulbs in it that produced light like the sun, though I calibrated with a grey card before the animals came in. Take a look at this http://www.pbase.com/image/166665261
As you can also see, he was free to move around the table. We also shot him in a contained box with rocks and dirt as the floor.
I'll post the black later - I have over 2600 photos to sort through that I took over 1 1/2 days. He didn't move much on the black, but was coiled up.

Love the soft lighting, were they using a soft box or hot lights? Knowing the nature of snakes was he in a box such as a light box to help keep him contained? I can’t imagine him wanting to stay put feeling as threatened as he looks. Of course I might be a little pissed if someone used a set of tongs on me too. I’d like to see the one in black also. Paul
