In The Early Morning Light

When I let my dogs out about 5:30 this morning I noticed rain drops on these leaves near the front porch. I went back inside, grabbed my camera and came back out and took a few shots. It was still totally dark outside except for the porch lights and a distant street light. Shooting wide open at 135mm and f/5.6 it still required a 1/5 sec exposure and iso 6400 to get the shot. Shot it hand held ... no tripod, monopod or leaning against something. I did take several shots and this was the best of the bunch. It's a bit noisy and not "tack" sharp, but under the circumstances, not too bad.

Thanks, Paul. The trick in a situation like this usually is to take a "burst" of shots to hopefully get one good one. To do that, set the camera to its maximum frame rate, then press and hold the shutter release for several shots. The first and last images will probably be the worst because of the movement from pressing and releasing the button. But, the ones in between - where you are simply holding the button down - should have less movement. Having said that, that's not how I shot this. For this I took several single shots (one shot at a time) and got lucky. If it had been something "important" I would have used the "spray and pray" method. But even then, there would be no guarantees.

1/5 at 135 mm freehand is making a profound statement about your abilities. I can't do it at all. I'm always impressed by how Traveller consistently seems to do it too.
