Dave - up in Madera Canyon, most of the hummer nests I see are with twigs, grass, and bits of leaves as you have noted. They will use almost anything.

Paul - see http://www.pbase.com/image/165221180 in pending.
The bird was going after the little threads on the jacket pull.

The ones that I've seen have leave bits, or maybe lichen in them.
I'll post in pending.

Paul - they use ant threads and lint that they can find. The staff at the desert museum also puts various material out for them.
I have a photo of one trying to pull a loose thread off the jacket of my sister-in-law.

Do you have any idea what it is they use for nesting material? I'd call this one Waiting. Paul
