1st Place - Portuguese Man o' War

Marathon, FL

I was walking on Coco Plum Beach this afternoon near high tide. There were numerous small man-of-war that had already washed up on shore. I spotted this live one, probably dying, a few feet off shore.

Traveller - no PS on the sand. What you see is the distortion caused by the water, sort of like looking through a 1.5 inch lens made of water which is swirling around. Other shots look different.

Paul - the water is only an inch or so deep so you will see the sand through the water at very fast shots.

The way I take Jim's caption is this is still in water so no sand should be visible, that's the water.
Nice eye and capture Jim. The only time I've seen jellies was washing up on shore in the Carolina's once and even saw a young boy get stung even tho it was already dead. It didn't look pleasant at all. I think they were using vinegar on the wound. Paul

Traveller - thanks, This shot is basically brighted up and with some vibrance and clarity added. It was quite cloudy, so I had nice diffuse light.
These creatures are really pretty blue. I may post a shot of one that has already washed up.
The background you see is the sand under the water. The water was only a couple of inches deep at most where it was washing up. Shooting at 1/500 sec allowed the sand to really come through.

Did you do any photo shop on the textured sand...it has a real tactility to it. Traveller

Geeze, how interesting...your wonderful otherworldly picture had me take a look further and found this at wiki

Despite its outward appearance, the Portuguese man o' war is not a common jellyfish but a siphonophore, which is not actually a single multicellular organism, but a colony of specialized minute individuals called zooids.[1] These zooids are attached to one another and physiologically integrated to the extent that not only are they incapable of independent survival, they also have to work together to function as a single organism.

Hummmm

Great Color, vibrant but not fake HDR like.
